Medicare Supplement Explained
Medicare Supplement, also known as Medigap, is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to help cover out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Original Medicare pays its share first — then your Medigap plan helps cover some or all of the remaining costs. Plans are standardized by the federal government, meaning benefits are consistent across carriers. Only premiums differ.
What to Expect
With a Medicare Supplement plan, you keep Original Medicare as your primary coverage. When you receive care, Medicare pays first. Your Medigap plan then steps in to cover eligible remaining costs based on your specific plan type. One major advantage is the flexibility to see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare — nationwide — without referrals or network restrictions.
Who It May Be Right For
Medicare Supplement may be a good fit for those who want predictable healthcare costs, travel frequently and need nationwide coverage, or prefer the freedom to see any Medicare-accepting provider without network limitations.
Standardized Plan Letters
Medigap plans are labeled by letter — Plan G, Plan N, and others. The benefits for each plan letter are the same regardless of which carrier you choose. What differs is the premium, which makes comparing straightforward. I do that comparison for you.
Enrollment Timing Matters
The recommended time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the six months starting the month you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B. Outside this window, medical underwriting may apply and carriers may be able to charge more or deny coverage based on health status.
Premiums Vary
While benefits are standardized by plan letter, premiums vary by carrier, plan type, age, and location. I compare all available options to help you find the most suitable rate.
Medicare Supplement plans are offered by insurance carriers and are not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. government or the federal Medicare program. Plan availability varies by location.
